The EG-TUS meeting is convened to present the final version of the revised UN Guide to Producing Statistics on Time Use and accompanying time-use data resources hub, which marks the conclusion of a phase of methodological development as expressed in the terms of reference of the EG-TUS and to strategize on ways to build national capacity and provide technical assistance to countries, particularly in developing regions in the area of time-use statistics as requested by the Statistical Commission. The EG-TUS meeting will also provide an opportunity for members to exchange the latest practices, lessons learned, and future projects.

This Expert Group Meeting is convened in Montreal, on 16 August 2022 to take stock of progress made in the revision of the 2005 United Nations Guidelines for Producing Time-use statistics, to be published in 2024, based on initial discussions and agreements at the experts’ meeting in May 2022. Additionally, the Expert Group will discuss progress made on the implementation / piloting of their proposed methods under the Development Account project on “Time Use Data for better policies in African, Western Asian and Latin American countries”, endorsed by the Statistical Commission in 2022, and other initiatives on time-use statistics implemented by members of the group. This meeting is organized back-to-back to the Conference and Workshop on time-use statistics organize by the International Association for Time-use Research (IATUR) in Montreal, Canada from 16 to 19 August 2022.

This meeting brought together the group of experts on time-use statistics, established by the Statistical Commission in 2020 to develop innovative and effective ways to produce and use time-use statistics. The Expert Group Meeting was convened to discuss the revision of the 2005 United Nations Guidelines for Producing Time-use statistics, to be published in 2024. In particular, the group discussed the outline of and specific steps for the revision of the Guidelines.

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) is organizing the third meeting of the Expert Group on Innovative and Effective ways to collect Time-Use Statistics (TUS), in line with ICATUS 2016 and other international standards, to be held in New York on 4 – 6 November 2019. The meeting will be convened to continue the process of developing methodological guidelines on how to operationalize ICATUS 2016 and produce time-use statistics using the latest technologies, as requested by the United Nations Statistical Commission at its forty-eighth session in 2017 in its decision 48/109.

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) organized the Sub-Regional Meeting whose purpose was to compile and share national experiences in approaches taken to measure the population with disabilities during national censuses of the 2010 round, and to discuss compilation of data on disability for monitoring of Sustainable Development Goals.

The UN Statistics Division, in collaboration with the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), and the National Centre for Statistics and Information of Oman organized the meeting with the following objectives: (i) to review and discuss national experiences, including challenges faced and lessons learned, to measure the population with disabilities during censuses of the 2010 round; (ii) to provide an opportunity to discuss strategies for compilation of data on disability for the monitoring of Sustainable Development Goals; and (iii) to foster intra-regional cooperation aimed at enhancing national capacity in disability measurement and improving the quality of data for monitoring the SDGs.

UNSD organized the 9th meeting of the IAEG-GS, held in Bangkok, Thailand from 29-30 October 2015. A total of 36 participants from international agencies, regional commissions and national statistical offices attended the meeting. The meeting reviewed the preliminary SDG indicators under Goal 5 – Achieving gender equality and empower all women and girls – proposed by the 2nd meeting of the Inter-agency and Expert Group on SDG Indicators (IAEG-SDGS), held from 26 to 28 October. The review was carried out from a technical perspective, highlighting the need for rephrasing or for correcting inconsistencies. The proposed indicators were further classified into 3 tiers according to the agree tiers system. The meeting also took note of work programmes and initiatives undertaken by IAEG-GS members to strengthen gender statistics at the international, regional and national levels.

The overall objective of the UN EDGE Follow-up Meeting on Measuring Asset Ownership from a Gender Perspective is to reach a tentative agreement on the broad recommendations on the design of the methodological survey experiments on measuring individual-level asset ownership from multi-purpose household surveys, including the Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS), with financial and technical contributions from theEvidence and Data for Gender Equality (EDGE) project.1 The goal will be to develop by the end of the day a clear agenda for this work program and next steps.

The United Nations Statistics Division is organizing a Workshop for South Asian countries on Collection and Dissemination of Socio-economic Data from Population and Housing Censuses. The workshop will take place in New Delhi, India from 28 to 31 May 2012. The purpose of the workshop is to present international standards and country practices for conducting population and housing censuses with a focus on recommended core topics and tabulations as identified in the United Nations Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses, Revision 2. The workshop will also offer an opportunity to discuss the use of technological tools and of GIS web-based mapping and spatial analysis in the dissemination of census data as well as of the CensusInfo software as a tool for data dissemination. Lastly, the workshop will also provide a forum for sharing of national practices and experiences regarding determination of census topics and tabulations and also strategies for dissemination of census data.

The Kenya Seminar on Census Data Analysis is scheduled to be held from 19 to 22 March 2012 in Nairobi, Kenya. The main objective of the national seminar is to provide an opportunity for the staff member of the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics to further analyze data from the 2009 population and housing census of Kenya on selected topics. The ultimate objective is to promote greater analysis and dissemination of the data collected from the Kenya 2009 census.

The national seminar will cover the following topics: (i) population projections at sub-national and sectoral level, (ii) analysis of data on international migration, and (iii) analysis of data on gender issues.

After the seminar, participants are expected to produce thematic analytical reports, based on analyses generated during the seminar.

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) in collaboration with the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) will organize a National Seminar on Census Data Analysis in the context of the 2010 World Programme for Population and Housing Censuses. The purpose of the Seminar is to assist the LISGIS on undertaking in-depth analysis of census data to produce an analytical report on the selected topics. The national seminar will cover the following topics: (i) youth and internal migration and (ii) employment and education. During the national seminar, the staff of LISGIS will attend the lectures on the topics of focus and engage in preliminary data analyses of 2008 census data. After the seminar, participants are expected to produce thematic analytical reports, based on analyses generated during the seminar.

The Burkina Faso National Seminar on Census Data Analysis is scheduled to be held from 14 to 16 November in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The main objective of the national seminar is to provide an opportunity for the staff member of the Burkina Faso Institut National de la Statistique et de la Démographie to further analyze data from the 2006 population and housing census of Burkina Faso on selected topics. The ultimate objective is to promote greater analysis and dissemination of the data collected from the 2006 census. The national seminar will cover the following topics: (i) population projections at municipal level, (ii) analysis of data on migration, and (iii) analysis of data on educational characteristics. After the seminar, participants are expected to produce thematic analytical reports, based on analyses generated during the seminar.

The United Nations Statistics Division and the National Bureau of Statistics of China are organizing the International Workshop on Social Statistics, scheduled for 22-26 November 2010 in Beijing, China. This workshop is being held as part of the social statistics programme of the United Nations Statistics Division with the purpose of enhancing the capacity of countries to collect, disseminate and use quality statistics on time use and on violence against women. This workshop is also intended to provide an opportunity to review and discuss new national initiatives and data collection tools for the improvement of these two areas of social statistics.

Egypt National Seminar on Census Data Analysis is scheduled to be held from 17 to 19 May in Cairo, Egypt. The main objective of the seminar is to provide an opportunity for the staff member of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) in collaboration with the Cairo Demographic Center and Cairo University, to further collaborate on the analysis of data from the 2006 census Egypt on selected topics. The seminar will cover an overview of calculation of the wealth index; gender analysis; and use of the CensusInfo software for data presentation and dissemination. After the seminar, participants are expected to produce thematic analytical reports, based on analyses generated during the seminar.

The purpose of the meeting is threefold. First, it aims at identifying the scope and content of contemporary social statistics in order to identify areas that need to be addressed by an international plan of action. In essence, for each social concern there needs to be an accompanying statistical data collection that requires relevant concepts and definitions, international standards, recommended topics, recommended tabulations, defined periodicity, and sources of data. Collected data would also need to be disaggregated by population groups (young, elderly, women, to name a few) and by geographical levels. Second, the meeting will address the issue of an international action plan for improving social statistics, pertaining to areas that require additional work, as well as on related issues such as coordination among various agencies and institutions regarding social statistics at both the national and international levels. This draft action plan would position the United Nations Statistics Division to continue conducting a thorough review and assessment of social statistics and point to the necessary developmental work on international standards. Finally, the meeting is expected to result in the draft terms of reference for the proposed city group, if the need for such a group is clearly identified. The proposal for establishment of the city group replacing the Siena City Group on Social Statistics was initiated at the Seminar on New Directions in Social Statistics, held on 22 February 2008 in New York.

The purpose of this workshop is to review procedures for obtaining fertility and mortality statistics by maximizing the use of multiple data sources and propose strategies for improving civil registration in the region. The workshop will also review national approaches to the collection of disability statistics. In addition, the meeting will explore ways of increasing the utilization of fertility, mortality and disability statistics at national and international levels. In this regard, the Demographic Yearbook system of collection and dissemination of these statistics will be considered.

The United Nations Expert Group Meeting on Setting the Scope of Social Statistics was convened in New York on 6-9 May 2003. The meeting was organized by the Social and Housing Statistics Section of the Demographic and Social Statistics Branch of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), in collaboration with the Siena Group on Social Statistics. The Expert Group Meeting was planned in response to the Statistical Commission’s recognition, at its thirty-third session, of the need for a more systematic development of social statistics.

The objective of the meeting was to propose a programme of work for furthering the development of social statistics, with a view to presenting it to the thirty-fifth session of Statistical Commission for action (for an elaborated statement of the purpose, see information flyer for the Expert Group Meeting, attached as Annex 1).

The objectives of the meeting were: • To agree on a regional common approach to collect data on disability from censuses • To initiate a dialogue in the region between census managers and users of disability statistics on how best a census can be utilized to collect data on persons with disabilities • To introduce countries to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and discuss its use as a conceptual framework for collecting census data on disability • To introduce the countries of the region to the work of the City Group on Disability Statistics.

The overall objective of the Workshop was to strengthen national capabilities to produce, disseminate and use data on disability for policy development and implementation. To achieve this objective, the Workshop brought together producers and users of disability statistics to promote understanding of data collection issues and how to specify the required data for policy formulation. The specific objectives of the Workshop were to: 1. Initiate a dialogue between producers and users of disability statistics in the countries and the region; 2. Enable the exchange of information and experiences of the participating countries and/or organizations; 3. Review methodologies and instruments used in other countries to measure disability; 4. Discuss the use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) as the conceptual framework for collecting and classifying data on disability; 5. Provide guidance on planning for the collection and utilization of policy relevant data on persons with disabilities.

The meeting brought together a broad array of developed and developing country experts in disability measurement for statistical reporting:- Review and assess current status of methods used in population-based data collection activities to measure disability in national statistical systems. Particular attention was given to questionnaire design;- Develop recommendations and priorities to advance work on measurement of disability;- Contribute to building a network of institutions and experts, including producers and users of disability statistics to implement the developments in this field.

At its twenty-eighth session (New York, 27 February-3 March 1995), the Statistical Commission, in its consideration of agenda item 12, “Measuring and monitoring economic and social development”, requested its Working Group on International Statistical Programmes and Coordination to consider further the statistical implications of the follow-up to the World Summit for Social Development (Copenhagen, 6-12 March 1995). The Commission also established the Expert Group on the Statistical Implications of Recent Major United Nations Conferences to draw up a work programme reflecting the major action areas identified by the Summit and indicating where international statistical work in the social field should be concentrated, with due regard to the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (Cairo, 5-13 September 1994) and the expected outcome of the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing, 4-15 September 1995). The Commission requested that, in the light of the policy areas identified, the Expert Group propose specific statistical activities for the period 1996-1998, and assign priorities to them based on the skills and financial resources likely to be available in international organizations and countries.
